Autumn Beech

Fagus sylvatica.
This beech is well into autumn. It is interesting to see some parts of the treehave shed their leaves, whereas others have not.
Is this because the tree withdraws most potential energy into the centre, thus shedding the leaves at the extremes first? Or is it because the tree is in poor health and is shutting down the extremeties to conserve energy?
