Leaning Tree

This norway maple (Acer platanoides) has a pronounced lean probably caused by windthrow in the past.
Windthrow happens when a strong wind causes the anchor roots to fail on the side facing the wind. Trees can often grow with a lean (away from other tree etc.) but raised soil levels indicate windthrow.
This photograph was taken in spring, when the tree was flowering.
