Callusing

This large beech has lost a big, lower limb in the past.
The loss of this branch has caused extensive damage to the main stem. Extensive decay has set in and the drying of the ripe wood have reduced the strength of the stem.
The response of the tree is to add wood- reaction growth- in the areas that have been weakened. This is known as the Axiom of Uniform Stress, a term coined by Dr Alex Shigo, which describes how a tree tries to minimise weak points in its form.
In this photograph, the tree has grown thick callusing around the wound, hopefully removing the weak point in the stem.
