Callusing On an Oak Stem
This large oak has suffered damage to the lower stem. This may have been caused by grazing or mechanical damage, or it may be fungal activity in this area.
The response of the tree is to add wood- reaction growth- in the areas that have been affected. The tree has tried to seal- Occlude- the exposed wood to prevent drying or decay.
