The oak is possibly the most impressive native tree. An open grown oak can be absolutely massive. It can reach well over 30m tall, the crown can spread 40m and the trunk girth can be 9m.
The gnarled trunk, massive branches, twisted habit, hollowed base and massive scars from lightning strikes and branch failures all offer enormous potential for bonsai subjects. It is possible to understand Tolkien's thoughts of ents when you see the old growth oaks in the ancient forests of Britain.
