This was an exciting day if you are an arborist. Trees were falling all over the place.
Many of the fast growing varieties fell over- pines, eucalyptus, birch, poplars etc. The old, hollow
oaks did not suffer as badly in comparison. Oaks shed some branches, but I did not see any root plate failures.
Many of these old oaks may be considered by some to be dangerous, but my observations show these other
types of tree were in fact more prone to failure in high winds.
Most of these old oaks are hollow and riddled with decay fungi, whereas the pines and poplars had healthy root
plates. Many people think that because a tree is hollow it has become unsafe. Claus Mattheck has gone to great length
to prove this is not always the case with his study of trees- 'The Body Language of Trees'.
