Small Leaved Lime

This large lime (Tilia cordata) failed in strong winds. The tree was 25m tall with a girth of 1.4m. It has failed at the root plate- the strong anchoring roots have snapped.
The wood of the main roots is soft and mushy. Armillaria often causes this kind of degredation of wood. Waterlogging causes inhospitable conditions for trees and aggressive fungi can then attack the now less resilient roots.
