Horse Chestnut

This large Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) has failed at the base of the stem. The failure is similar to that of the first beech in the gallery and is a ceramic fracture.
Ustulina is present and is the probable cause of the failure. Here it can be seen in its immature, asexual fruiting stage.
Notice the forming of the perfect stage of the fruit body to the left of the photograph.
