Veteran Beech

This tree is one of a few survivors of a very old stand of trees. The original stand would have contained trees all of a similar age. The problem with this is that the trees begin to die off at the same time, leaving large gaps and little regeneration, due to the environment of beech woods.
Notice the regeneration. This suggests the other trees died off, or were felled- a number of years ago.
This tree must have lost the top half many years ago.
Notice how it has formed a lower canopy.
